All eyes are on the opposing campaign platforms of former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential contest, which is becoming more intense. With the presidential candidates now confirmed, both leaders are employing their slogans to appeal to voters as the countdown to Election Day begins.
Donald Trump remains steadfast in his unwavering support for his well-known slogan, “Make America Great Again” (MAGA), which first gained traction during his successful 2016 campaign and played a pivotal role in his electoral victory. In spite of its reduced influence in the 2020 election, Trump remains steadfast in his commitment to this message, placing great emphasis on a return to what he perceives as a more favorable past. In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump declared, “Our Country is failing, but we will turn it around, quickly, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
In contrast, Harris’s campaign has adopted the slogan “Not going back” to underscore a commitment to preserving and advancing current policies rather than reverting to previous administrations’ approaches. Harris has used this statement to underline the risks of regressing to Trump-era policies, especially with relation to subjects like abortion rights, after President Biden withdrew from the race on July 21. Harris said at a Philadelphia rally introducing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, “Tim and I have a message for Trump and anyone who wishes to turn back the clock on our fundamental liberties: We’re not going back. We are not going back, thus the audience started chanting in agreement.
For various reasons, this election cycle is different. First, it shows a previous president trying to retake the White House following a past loss—an uncommon occurrence in American history.
Secondly, Harris is leading the ticket following Biden’s abrupt exit, a development that has reshaped the political landscape.
Trump’s campaign message is a direct critique of the Biden administration’s performance, focusing on what he describes as failures and missteps. In a speech at the Republican National Convention, Trump pointed to immigration issues and other challenges as evidence of the current administration’s inadequacy, declaring, “It’s time for a change. This administration can’t come close to solving the problems.”
For Harris, the campaign is framed as a defense of progress made under Biden and a rejection of any rollback to Trump’s policies. “This campaign is not just about us versus Donald Trump. Truly, this campaign is about two very different visions for our nation: one focused on the future, the other focused on the past,” she remarked during a rally in Atlanta.
The dynamic between the two campaigns is also evident in their choice of running mates. Trump’s pick, Senator JD Vance, has faced criticism for his perceived seriousness and anger, especially when discussing Harris’s role in the administration. In response to questions about his demeanor, Vance joked about enjoying media interactions but remained critical of Harris and the current state of affairs, expressing frustration with what he sees as mismanagement.
Conversely, Walz’s presentations are marked by hope and an emphasis on the successful features of Harris’s campaign. Emphasizing the happiness she brings to the campaign trail, Walz thanked Harris during his speech in Philadelphia for the chance to campaign with her. “Thank you, Madam Vice President, for the trust you put in me, but, maybe more so, thank you for bringing back the joy,” he said, stressing Harris’s positive attitude to her position.
Biden’s withdrawal from the contest has fundamentally changed the nature of the campaigning. Based on Five Thirty-Eight, Harris now heading the ticket has a little advantage over Trump in most recent surveys. This change has compelled Trump to change his approach, focusing on Harris with fresh accusations instead of directly attacking Biden. Trump has used Truth Social to launch attacks on Harris’s record and identity, including comments on her voting record and racial background.
Harris, meanwhile, has used her increased visibility to reintroduce herself to voters, focusing on her background as a prosecutor and her vision for the future. Intending to emphasize her leadership abilities and dedication to progressive ideas, she has engaged campaign veterans from Barack Obama’s team to hone her messaging and approach.
The campaign will probably center on the sharp contrast between Trump’s nostalgic appeal and Harris’s forward-looking posture as the election draws near. The different themes set the atmosphere for a high-stakes and carefully observed election by reflecting larger arguments on the course of the nation and the priorities of its leadership.
