President Donald Trump convened his inaugural cabinet meeting of the new term on February 26, 2025, setting the stage for an ambitious agenda aimed at overhauling government operations and addressing international trade relations. The meeting, marked by the prominent presence of Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), highlighted plans for substantial federal workforce reductions and introduced potential tariffs, leading to a mix of support and uncertainty among political leaders and the public.

Though not formally a cabinet member, Elon Musk has been assigned to oversee DOGE, a division dedicated to simplifying government operations and cutting expenses.  Musk set a high target for the conference: a $1 trillion reduction of the federal deficit by 2026.  He underlined the need to get rid of inefficiencies, including spotting and firing non-existent or duplicate staff members of federal agencies.  Musk freely admitted earlier mistakes, including the brief suspension of initiatives aimed at preventing Ebola that were quickly restored upon discovery of the mistake.  “We’ll fix it very quickly,” he said, “when we make mistakes.”

Declaring unflinching support for Musk’s projects, President Trump exhorted cabinet members to apply like-minded efficiency policies within their individual ministries.  He underlined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the main target for workforce reduction, implying that up to 65% of its employees might be let go.  Trump said, “We had a lot of people not performing their duties.  They were merely obstructions.

The conference also discussed approaching tariffs on important trading partners, especially Mexico and Canada.  Aiming to coerce these countries into strengthening border restrictions and fighting problems like fentanyl trafficking, President Trump had already declared a 25% tax slated to take effect on March 4.  But he proposed a possible delay to April 2 during the cabinet session, which confused things.  Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, added to the uncertainty by suggesting that should Mexico and Canada show successful actions addressing administration issues, the tariffs may be delayed much more.

Citing trade imbalances and obstacles experienced by American exporters, President Trump also revealed intentions to levy a 25% tariff on goods from the European Union in addition to North American duties.  He said, “They have truly abused us.  Our autos are not accepted by them.  They reject virtually all our agricultural output.

The administration’s intention to drastically cut the federal workforce dominated the conference.  Apart from the EPA, other departments are expected to have significant staff reduction.  For example, the Department of Education might see its federal influence minimized by having state governments handle its obligations.  These steps complement Musk’s DOGE project, which has been aggressively spotting government departmental inefficiencies and duplicity.

Musk’s methodology has not been without debate.  Under threat of termination, his mandate for federal employees to document their weekly contributions has spurred discussions about morale and the possible loss of key staff members.  President Trump justified the plan in the face of these issues by implying that non-responsive workers could be “phantoms” on the payroll.

Foreign policy was also discussed during the cabinet meeting as President Trump confirmed an impending trip from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.  Aimed at strengthening commercial ties and ensuring vital resources, the presidents are due to sign an agreement on rare earth minerals.  Emphasizing the financial side of U.S. support to Ukraine, Trump said, “We’re going to get a lot of money in the future, and I think that’s appropriate, because we have taxpayers that shouldn’t be footing the bill.”

The first cabinet meeting of the term for President Trump revealed a strong agenda emphasizing government efficiency, financial restraint, and forceful trade measures.  Although proponents praise the government’s dedication to lower waste and correct trade inequalities, detractors warn against possible overreach and the wider consequences of such all-encompassing changes.  Political analysts and the world community will keenly watch these measures as they start to alter domestic governance as well as international relations.
