As global temperatures rise and environmental changes exert pressure on nations worldwide, cities are grappling with new challenges in their quest for a sustainable future. However, some destinations have embraced smart solutions, aiming to enhance long-term quality of life and provide a model for others to follow. The International Institute for Management Development (IMD) has once again ranked the world’s smartest cities, evaluating economic and technological strengths that elevate quality of life and address societal challenges. Now in its fifth year, the Smart Cities Index 2024 surveyed residents of 142 cities, focusing on health and safety, mobility, activities, opportunities, and governance.

Interestingly, not a single city from North America or Africa made it into the top 20 this year, with Europe and Asia dominating the list. To understand what makes these cities “smart,” we spoke to residents in five of the highest-ranked locations to discover the features that significantly impact their lives.

Canberra, Australia0
Ranking third in the index, Canberra stands out as one of the few non-European or Asian cities in the top 20. Australia’s capital scored particularly well for its low air pollution, abundant green spaces, and high sense of inclusion among minority citizens. This comes as no surprise to Bryden and David Campbell, co-founders of Brand Rebellion, a consultancy based in Canberra.

“What truly stands out is the strong sense of community,” said Bryden. “There’s a genuine connectedness and a willingness to help and support others, making it a warm and welcoming place to call home.” Canberra’s proximity to nature also shapes its sustainability initiatives. “Canberra is advanced in clean energy and renewable initiatives,” she said. “The city has ambitious targets to achieve net zero emissions by 2045, evident in the ongoing electrification and adoption of renewable energy sources.”

Additionally, Canberra leverages technology to enhance livability and attract businesses. “The city’s smart city initiatives, including smart lighting, waste management, and traffic systems, significantly improve efficiency and sustainability,” said David. High-speed internet supports remote work, while innovation hubs foster tech development and entrepreneurship.

Singapore
Singapore ranked fifth and improved its position thanks to high scores in safety, connectivity, and efficient government services. Firdaus Syazwani, founder of Dollar Bureau, highlights the enhanced public transportation system.

“Singapore’s public transportation is greatly enhanced by open data and contactless payment technologies,” he said. “This streamlines travel, making it exceptionally convenient.”

The government and private companies publish extensive datasets on traffic patterns and transit schedules, which app developers use to create solutions for commuters, optimizing travel routes and reducing congestion. Kirk Westaway, executive chef at JAAN, praises these small but impactful innovations.

“Contactless payments and real-time data mean you’re not left wondering if you’ll get to your destination on time,” he said. Singapore’s commitment to sustainability is also evident. “Technology spearheads sustainability efforts, with urban farming becoming common,” he said, citing the Aquaponics Farm at Swissôtel The Stamford as an example of integrating innovative food production in urban areas.

Lausanne, Switzerland
Lausanne, ranking seventh, is a smaller city with big city amenities. Olivia Bosshart of Lausanne Tourism appreciates its intimacy and accessibility. “I love living in Lausanne because it’s such a small city with all the amenities of a big town,” she said. “Everything is so close on foot.” Lausanne invests heavily in green spaces, with 360 hectares of urban greenery and an initiative to plant over 1,400 trees annually. The city is also committed to a sustainable digital transition.

“The City of Lausanne supports reducing its digital impact and provides digital services to residents and visitors,” explained Alexane Bornoz, communications director at the City of Lausanne. “A mobile app offers practical information for visiting and living in Lausanne, and e-administration services make life easier.”

London, United Kingdom
London, ranked eighth, continues to excel in online services and transportation ease. Emma Orr of Winning Business UK Ltd. notes London’s diverse transport options and vibrant city life.

“With the Tube, buses, boats, and active travel schemes like bikes and scooters, London is a fun place with lots going on every day,” she said.

London has made significant sustainability commitments in recent years. “There is a rise in smart grids and renewable energy in building design and energy harvesting,” she said. London’s push for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure ties into its Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) policy, encouraging EV use and reducing emissions. “EV infrastructure is more advanced in London than other UK cities,” she said, emphasizing the city’s goal for 80% of journeys to be by walking, cycling, or public transport by 2041.

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Abu Dhabi, climbing to 10th place, excels in transportation and online services. Dhanvin Sriram, founder of AI tool Prompt Vibes, highlights the city’s advanced mobility solutions. “The integration of vehicle charging infrastructure and autonomous driving solutions makes commuting smooth and efficient,” he said. The intelligent mobility center ensures seamless management of land, sea, air, and rail transportation, reducing congestion and environmental impact. Sriram also praises Masdar City, a sustainable neighborhood blending traditional architecture with modern technology. “The design provides a naturally cool environment, and extensive solar panels harness the Sun’s energy,” he said.

Masdar City aims to house 40,000 residents, with buildings designed to reduce energy and water consumption by at least 40%. Despite slower progress, the initiative showcases Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainability. “Abu Dhabi is where technology and sustainability come together, making life easier and more enjoyable,” said Sriram.

As global challenges mount, these smart cities provide a blueprint for sustainable urban living. From advanced transportation systems to green initiatives, they exemplify how innovative solutions can transform urban life, setting a standard for cities worldwide.
