With a stunning Closing Ceremony marking the end of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, focus is now on the next big event scheduled for the worldwide sports calendar, the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The Games are coming back to the United States after more than 30 years. They will bring a new mix of sports and new venue ideas to Southern California.

When?
Starting on July 14, 2028, the 2028 Summer Olympics will last through July 30, 2028. Two well-known sites—the Los Angeles Coliseum and SoFi Stadium—will host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. This dual-venue strategy is meant to highlight Los Angeles’ strong sporting legacy while embracing modern architectural wonders.

The Paralympic Games will be hosted in Southern California from August 15 to August 27, 2028 following the end of the Summer Games. For athletes with impairments, this will be a momentous time following the Paralympic Games’ legacy of high competition and motivating achievements.

Los Angeles Previous Olympic Hosts
Los Angeles has twice held the Olympics: once in 1932 and once more in 1984. The city will hold the Games in 2028, third time. Only four times have the United States hosted the Summer Olympics; past editions took place in St. Louis in 1904 and Atlanta in 1996. Four times the United States has hosted the Winter Olympics; a fifth is planned for not too far future.

New and Returning Sports 2028 Games
The 2028 Olympics will include a variety of new sports as well as the return of some that have not competed in years. Men’s and women’s flag football, making its Olympic debut, is among the most awaited additions. NFL stars like Patrick Mahomes have shown interest even if specifics on the U.S. team composition are yet unknown. The official ambassador for the sport will be Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Another new sport to the Olympics is squash, which has been tried four times before. This will add to the variety of sports that will be played. Following their absence in Paris 2024, baseball and softball will make a comeback to the Olympics Furthermore included for the first time in more than a century will be lacrosse and cricket. Last contested in the 1900 Olympics, cricket and lacrosse—which was last included in 1908—are scheduled to resurface and present fresh chances for competition. Breaking, which debuted in Paris, will not be part of the 2028 lineup, underscoring the Olympic program’s continual change.

Sites and venues
The Games will take place at several legendary Los Angeles sites. The venerable Los Angeles Coliseum, with an Olympic legacy from both 1932 and 1984, will host track and field events. SoFi Stadium will host swimming events including a makeshift pool for the occasion. There will be diving at Exposition Park, next to the Coliseum. The Los Angeles Lakers call the Crypto.com Arena home, although it will be used for gymnastics rather than basketball. Events related to basketball are scheduled for the Intuit Dome, next to SoFi Stadium, which will also hold the Los Angeles Clapper.

Long Beach will be the site for sailing events; venues for surfing and beach volleyball are currently under development. Golf will take place at the esteemed Riviera Country Club; soccer is scheduled for the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, with possible games in other locations. Because Oklahoma City has developed facilities for softball and canoe slalom, more than 1,300 miles from Los Angeles will be used for these sports. Oklahoma City offers a top Canoe Slalom Center and routinely hosts the women’s College World Series.

Winter Olympics in 2026
The Winter Olympics will visit northern Italy in 2026 with activities dispersed among Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo before Los Angeles takes front stage. There will be eight new events and introduction of ski mountaineering in this version. February 6–February 22, 2026 is the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

Future Olympic Games
Beyond 2028, Nice is the principal host city for the 2030 Winter Olympics scheduled in the French Alps. Salt Lake City, Utah will host the Winter Games returning to the United States in 2034; Brisbane, Australia will host the Summer Olympics.

Excitement over the additions to the Olympic program grows as the worldwide sports community waits for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Combining historical sites, modern sports, and more possibilities, the 2028 Games should provide a vibrant and unforgettable experience for both participants and onlookers.
