Lewis Hamilton Winning GP in Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton claimed a landmark Hamilton’s Ferrari Victory at the Barcelona Grand Prix, winning his first Grand Prix for Ferrari and ending Mercedes’ unbeaten start to the 2026 Formula 1 season as Kimi Antonelli suffered a late shock retirement.

Hamilton finished ahead of George Russell and Lando Norris after Ferrari’s race strategy proved effective in the heat at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The result also delivered a Barcelona GP all-British podium, the first of its kind in Formula 1 since 1968.

Antonelli, who entered the race as the standings leader, had looked set for another major points finish before trouble struck with only five laps remaining.

It changed the race. It also tightened the title picture.

Hamilton’s Ferrari Victory Built on Strategy

Hamilton started on soft tires, but Ferrari’s opening gamble did not give him the immediate launch needed to beat Russell into Turn 1. Russell held the lead from pole, while Antonelli, Norris and Max Verstappen kept their places behind.

Ferrari stayed patient.

The team moved Hamilton onto a three-stop strategy as tyre degradation increased during the hottest race weekend of the season so far. Mercedes initially looked safe on a more conventional approach, but Ferrari’s decision began to look stronger once Hamilton found pace on fresh rubber.

The key moment came when a Virtual Safety Car gave Hamilton a cheaper final stop. Ferrari called him in, fitted fresh hard tires, and sent him back out still ahead of Russell. From there, Hamilton controlled the final phase. He built the gap steadily and crossed the line 19.5 seconds ahead of Russell. For Ferrari, it was a decisive and well-executed performance after several races in which Mercedes had been in control.

The win also gave fresh weight to the question of how Lewis Hamilton won the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix for Ferrari. The answer came from tyre timing, race pace, and a well-timed Virtual Safety Car.

Antonelli Retirement Hits Mercedes Late

Mercedes had controlled much of the early rhythm through Russell, but Antonelli’s late retirement turned a strong team result into a missed opportunity.

The Italian had stayed close to the front runners and later forced his way past Russell for second place. Shortly after that move, his car slowed following damage, and he pulled off the circuit on Lap 62 of 66.

That ended his race.

The Kimi Antonelli shock retirement carried extra weight because of its timing in the F1 2026 standings. Antonelli had built a lead earlier in the season, but Hamilton’s win cut into that advantage and changed the momentum heading into the next round.

The retirement also spared Norris from needing a late pass or penalty swing to reach the podium. McLaren had kept pressure on Mercedes through the final stint, and Norris took third as the drama unfolded ahead.

For Mercedes, the result was mixed. Russell still scored second place, but the team lost its winning streak and watched a potential double podium slip away in the closing laps.

Ferrari Win Changes Title Picture

The Ferrari F1 win in Barcelona gave Hamilton his first race victory in nearly two years and his first since joining the Italian team. It also marked the strongest proof yet that Ferrari can challenge Mercedes when strategy and tyre performance align.

Behind the podium, Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull, with Oscar Piastri fifth for McLaren. Isack Hadjar added sixth for Red Bull, while Pierre Gasly delivered seventh for Alpine.

Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad moved into eighth and ninth after Franco Colapinto received a post-race penalty, dropping him to 10th. The race produced seven official retirements, including Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Nico Hulkenberg, Valtteri Bottas, Oliver Bearman and Antonelli.

The Formula 1 results showed how punishing Barcelona became once tyre wear, technical issues and late-race pressure combined.

Ferrari’s win also matters beyond the trophy. Hamilton had endured a difficult adaptation period, but the Barcelona result showed the team can build a winning Sunday around his race management and tyre feedback.

Mercedes still leaves Spain with points from Russell, but the loss of Antonelli’s car late in the race softened its advantage. McLaren collected another podium through Norris, while Red Bull stayed in the fight with both cars in the top six.

The Hamilton’s Ferrari Victory now shifts attention to the next phase of the championship. It ended Mercedes’ perfect run, reduced Antonelli’s cushion, and gave Ferrari its clearest signal yet that its 2026 campaign can move from recovery to contention. Barcelona did not settle the title race, but it changed its tone sharply.
