Could Your Eclipse Glasses Be Fake? Experts Weigh In on Ensuring a Risk-Free Viewing Experience

With the excitement building for the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, concerns about the authenticity of eclipse glasses have emerged, prompting experts to provide valuable guidance for ensuring safe viewing experiences.

Rick Fienberg, the project manager of the American Astronomical Society’s solar eclipse task force, reassures the public that no demonstrably unsafe glasses have been identified thus far. However, with the proliferation of eclipse viewers available online, fears of counterfeit or substandard glasses have heightened.

While Fienberg remains optimistic about the safety of most glasses on the market, he acknowledges instances where glasses from China bear misleading information, such as false claims of being manufactured in the U.S. To address such concerns, buyers are advised to consult the list of official sellers and manufacturers curated by the American Astronomical Society (AAS), which rigorously verifies test reports and certifications.

The AAS list includes reputable North American manufacturers like American Paper Optics, as well as major retail chains such as Walmart, Lowe’s, and Kroger. Additionally, NASA offers a simple method for at-home testing of eclipse glasses, involving observing a bright light source like a flashlight. If the light appears extremely dim or not at all, the glasses are deemed safe for viewing.

It is crucial to avoid testing eclipse glasses with direct sunlight, as this can lead to eye damage. Furthermore, glasses with scratches or damage should not be used for viewing the eclipse, as they may not provide adequate protection.

The international standard for solar eclipse viewers, ISO 12312-2, established nine years ago, serves as the benchmark for safety. This standard, adopted by nearly every country globally, ensures the reliability of eclipse glasses for direct sun viewing. Prior to its implementation, various standards existed, leading to inconsistencies in viewer safety.

In the lead-up to the 2017 solar eclipse, concerns arose regarding the verification of ISO certification for eclipse glasses, particularly those manufactured in China. While some glasses claimed ISO certification without substantiated proof, Amazon took measures to address the issue, offering refunds for certain glasses that did not meet industry standards.

Despite initial apprehensions, subsequent testing revealed that the majority of eclipse glasses, including those from Chinese manufacturers, met safety requirements. However, vigilance remains essential, as some vendors may attempt to circumvent safety protocols.

Fienberg emphasizes the importance of caution when purchasing eclipse glasses, urging consumers to prioritize verified sellers and manufacturers. While there is confidence in the safety of most glasses, uncertainties persist, warranting prudent decision-making.

As preparations for the April 8 total solar eclipse intensify, experts underscore the significance of adhering to safety guidelines to safeguard vision and enhance the viewing experience. With proper precautions and informed choices, spectators can witness this celestial event with confidence and peace of mind.
