Tragic Train Collision Claims Eight Lives and Injures Many in Andhra

In a devastating incident, a collision between two trains in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district on the Howrah-Chennai line has left at least eight people dead and around 20 individuals injured. The collision occurred on Sunday evening, as confirmed by a police official.

According to a senior official from the East Coast Railway, the Palasa Passenger train collided with the Rayagada Passenger train from behind at Kankatapalli, resulting in the derailment of three coaches. This tragic incident has caused significant casualties and disruptions in the region.

A senior railway official reported that 18-20 people sustained injuries in the collision and are now being transported to hospitals in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram for urgent medical attention.

Dr. S. Appala Naidu, the superintendent in charge of the Government General Hospital in Vizianagaram, provided further information, stating, “Ambulances have been sent to the accident sites, and as of now, we have received 20 injured people, out of which three are in serious condition. More ambulances are on the way, so the number of injured persons might increase.”

The doctor also mentioned that while the hospital has received injured passengers, there have been reports of fatalities among some passengers involved in the collision.

The chief public relations officer of the East Coast Railway reported that the accident took place between Alamanda and Kantakapalli in the Vizianagaram-Kottavalasa Railway Section, within the Waltair division of the East Coast Railway Zone. The collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m.

The official explained that the accident involved two trains, namely the 08532 Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger train and the 08504 Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger Special train. Notably, the latter train had overshot the signal, contributing to the collision. As a result of the impact, two coaches of the Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger train derailed from the rear, and the locomotive of the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger also derailed.

Rescue operations are currently underway at the accident site, with the divisional railway manager of Waltair, Saurabh Prasad, and his team actively involved in managing the situation.

In response to the tragic incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office released a statement on Twitter, confirming that the Prime Minister was in touch with the railway minister and that all necessary assistance was being provided to those affected. The statement expressed condolences to the families of the victims and hoped for the swift recovery of the injured.

Andhra Pradesh minister Botcha Satyanarayana is overseeing the ongoing rescue operations, although they have been challenged by the onset of darkness, complicating the efforts to manage the aftermath of the collision.

As the investigation and rescue operations continue, this heartbreaking train collision has left a significant impact on the affected individuals and their families. The authorities are working tirelessly to provide support and assistance to those affected by this unfortunate incident.
