Scientific Submersible ‘Ran’ Goes Missing – What Lies in the Depths of the Antarctic Ocean?
In a concerning turn of events reminiscent of a recent high-profile submersible disappearance, another underwater research vessel has vanished, this time in the frigid waters near Antarctica. While not carrying passengers like the ill-fated Titanic submersible, the loss of this scientific equipment deals a significant blow to ongoing research efforts.
The missing submersible, named Ran, was purchased by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden for approximately $3.6 million in 2015, making it one of only three of its kind in the world. Measuring 23 feet in length, Ran was a vital tool for researchers studying climate change and the melting of the Thwaites Glacier, also known as the “Doomsday Glacier,” due to its potential to raise global sea levels by over 10 feet if fully melted.
The submersible disappeared while scientists were utilizing it remotely to investigate the dynamics of the Thwaites Glacier. Professor Anna Wåhlin, a leader on the research project and an expert in physical oceanography, expressed the significance of Ran’s role in their studies. “Thanks to Ran, we became the first researchers in the world to enter Thwaites in 2019,” she stated. “Even if you see melting and movements in the ice from satellite data, from Ran we get close-ups of the underside of the ice and information about exactly which mechanisms are behind the melting.”
However, the fate of the submersible remains uncertain, with Wåhlin expressing grim prospects for its recovery. “It’s a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack, but without even knowing where the haystack is,” she lamented. “At this point, Ran’s batteries are dead. All we know is that something unexpected happened under the ice. We suspect it ran into trouble, and then something prevented it from getting out.”
The disappearance of Ran echoes a similar incident in June 2023 when a submersible carrying five passengers went missing in the North Atlantic waters near the Titanic wreckage. The global attention garnered by that event underscores the significance of such losses in the realm of scientific exploration.
