Eight passengers, including six from the United States and two from Australia, found themselves stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their cruise ship, the Norwegian Dawn, departed without them. The group was left behind due to their late return from a private tour, turning what was meant to be a dream vacation into a challenging ordeal.
The Norwegian Dawn embarked on a 21-day voyage from Cape Town, South Africa, to Barcelona, Spain, on March 20. However, on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists failed to make it back to the ship on time, missing the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. after a private excursion on the island.
According to reports, the tourists’ tour operator informed the cruise captain of the delay, and local efforts were made to facilitate their return to the ship. Despite these attempts, the group was not permitted to board, leaving them stranded on the island for several days.
The stranded passengers faced numerous challenges, including language barriers and currency issues, as they attempted to arrange alternative travel to catch up with the ship. Despite the assistance of local authorities and hospitality from the people of São Tomé, navigating the logistics of travel proved to be a daunting task.
Norwegian Cruise Line described the incident as “very unfortunate” and reiterated that guests are responsible for ensuring their timely return to the ship. The company stated that it was working with local authorities to facilitate the passengers’ return to the ship at the next available port of call.
Efforts to rejoin the cruise in Banjul, Gambia, were unsuccessful due to adverse weather conditions and tidal restrictions. However, arrangements were made for the passengers to meet the ship in Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.
The Campbells, one of the affected couples, expressed hesitation about reboarding the ship, questioning the cruise line’s duty of care and prioritization of customer safety. They raised concerns about the rigid adherence to rules at the expense of passenger well-being.
Despite the challenges, all eight passengers successfully reunited with the Norwegian Dawn in Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday morning. Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed that the passengers would be reimbursed for their travel costs and reiterated its commitment to supporting them throughout the ordeal.
In a separate incident, another passenger, Julia Lenkoff, 80, was left on the island due to a medical issue. Norwegian Cruise Line facilitated her return home, coordinating with her family to ensure her safe repatriation. Lenkoff’s daughter expressed gratitude for the assistance, highlighting the importance of the timely intervention in her mother’s medical care.
While the incident has undoubtedly been a harrowing experience for stranded passengers, the successful resolution underscores the importance of effective communication and support in crisis situations. Norwegian Cruise Line’s efforts to address the situation and ensure the passengers’ welfare reflect a commitment to passenger safety and well-being.
