The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is set to enhance the country’s reputation as a premier gastronomic tourism destination through a series of events titled “Amazing Food Festival 2024.” This initiative is aimed at showcasing the rich diversity of Thai food culture and boosting the nation’s status on the global culinary stage.

The “Amazing Food Festival 2024” series will feature multiple events, beginning in Chiang Mai from July 20-22 at Central Festival Chiang Mai and continuing in Prachuap Khiri Khan from August 10-12 at Hua Don Beach, Khao Takiab, Hua Hin. The first event, held last weekend at Central Phuket under the theme “Good Food Good Vibes,” highlighted the extensive range of gastronomic tourism experiences available throughout Thailand.

The event in Phuket was officially inaugurated by Dr. Phonpoom Vipattipumiprates, Vice Minister of Tourism and Sports, along with Mr. Sophon Suwanrat, Governor of Phuket Province, and Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor. Ms. Thapanee emphasized that the festival aligns with the government’s “Ignite Tourism Thailand” vision. This vision includes promoting five key activities, one of which is “Must Eat,” designed to leverage gastronomy tourism as a means to attract tourists and stimulate the local economy through culinary tours.

Over three days, the event showcased an array of local signature dishes and specialty menus from renowned MICHELIN-awarded restaurants, famous eateries, and street food vendors. Cooking demonstrations were conducted by prominent chefs such as Chef Big Phuripat Jaiweerattanakul, the Stars Chef Thailand Winner and Head of Cold Kitchen at Hilton Bangkok Grand Asoke, and Chef Kao Vayo Nisatchanakan, among other emerging and local chefs from communities like Ban Bang Rong and Bang Tao-Cherng Talay.

The festival also featured music performances by popular Thai artists including Chart Suchart, Getsanova, Earth Patravee, Off Pongsak, Tangmo The Voice, and Zani Nipaporn, providing entertainment and enhancing the festive atmosphere. Additionally, unique activities specific to each event location, such as art and craft booths and a Thailand Tourism Awards booth showcasing award-winning sustainable businesses, were available to visitors.

A significant emphasis was placed on sustainability throughout the festival. Waste separation stations were strategically placed around the event venue, with staff on hand to assist and encourage visitors to participate in Thailand’s push towards sustainable tourism. This effort aligns with the broader global trend of promoting sustainable travel and ecotourism.

Through the “Amazing Food Festival 2024” Facebook page, visitors could register for one-day trips to explore local communities and learn about their role in supplying locally sourced ingredients to city shops and restaurants. This aspect of the festival not only highlights the importance of local communities in the gastronomic supply chain but also fosters a deeper connection between tourists and the local culture.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool expressed optimism about the festival’s economic impact. “The Amazing Food Festival 2024 is expected to attract 50,000 visitors and generate 35 million Baht in revenue at each of the three locations, helping to distribute some 100 million Baht to the Thai economy,” she stated. This projection underscores the festival’s potential to significantly contribute to the local economy by drawing large crowds and promoting spending within the region.

The success of the initial event in Phuket sets a promising precedent for the upcoming festivals in Chiang Mai and Prachuap Khiri Khan. By continually highlighting Thailand’s rich culinary heritage and promoting sustainable practices, the TAT aims to solidify the country’s position as a top destination for gastronomic tourism.

The “Amazing Food Festival 2024” serves as a model for other countries looking to promote their culinary heritage as a tourism attraction. By combining food, culture, and sustainability, Thailand is setting a benchmark for how gastronomic tourism can be leveraged to boost the economy while promoting responsible travel practices.
