Saudi Crown Prince Urges India-Pakistan Dialogue During Meeting with Pakistani Premier

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized the critical need for dialogue between Pakistan and India to address longstanding disputes and ensure regional peace and stability. The call for dialogue came during a meeting between the Crown Prince and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Riyadh, marking Sharif’s first international visit since assuming office following February’s elections.

According to a joint statement released by Pakistan’s foreign office and the Saudi government, both leaders underscored the importance of resolving outstanding issues between India and Pakistan, notably the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, through constructive dialogue.

The Jammu and Kashmir region has been a longstanding flashpoint, claimed in full but administered in part by both India and Pakistan since their independence from Britain in 1947. Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors have escalated over the years, marked by three wars, with Kashmir being at the heart of their territorial disputes.

Relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated significantly following a 2019 suicide bombing of an Indian military convoy in Kashmir, attributed to Pakistan-based militants. Subsequently, India conducted airstrikes targeting what it identified as militant bases within Pakistan.

Recent statements from Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh underscored a hardline stance, indicating India’s readiness to enter Pakistan to pursue militants attempting to carry out activities across the border.

In light of these developments, a report by Britain’s Guardian newspaper highlighted Indian government operations in Pakistan since 2020, reportedly resulting in the deaths of approximately 20 individuals as part of efforts to neutralize militants operating from foreign soil.

Despite these challenges, India maintains robust ties with several Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, a relationship that has grown stronger under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is poised to seek a third term in office in upcoming elections commencing on April 19.

During their meeting, Prime Minister Sharif and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also discussed the expedited implementation of a planned $5 billion investment package. This investment is crucial for Pakistan, which faces a pressing need to bolster its current account deficit and demonstrate fiscal responsibility to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a key requirement in previous bailout agreements.

Earlier this year, Pakistan alleged credible evidence linking Indian agents to the killing of two Pakistani citizens on its soil. India vehemently denied these accusations, dismissing them as “false and malicious” propaganda.

The dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reflects a concerted effort to de-escalate tensions in the region and foster constructive engagement between India and Pakistan. The outcome of these diplomatic efforts holds significant implications for peace and stability in South Asia.
