According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, there has been progressing in the negotiations to secure an immediate truce in the Gaza conflict and the release of Hamas detainees. The talks are “getting closer” to a resolution, he said with hope.
Speaking during an interview with Al-Hadath in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Blinken highlighted that efforts have been made in collaboration with Qatar, Egypt, and Israel to present a robust proposal. Although Hamas initially did not accept the proposal and came back with additional requests, Blinken expressed confidence that progress is being made as negotiators continue their discussions.
While Blinken did not delve into specifics regarding the narrowing gaps in the negotiations or the basis for his confidence in reaching an agreement, he emphasized that Hamas must ultimately accept the proposal on the table. Previously, President Joe Biden had also expressed optimism about an imminent ceasefire, though later adjustments were made after stakeholders distanced themselves from Biden’s prediction.
Reiterating the importance of Hamas accepting the proposed agreement, Blinken emphasized the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of people in Gaza. He underscored the necessity for increased aid delivery to Gaza and called on Israel to facilitate more access points to the region. Blinken also mentioned the ongoing construction of a floating maritime pier, intended to facilitate large aid shipments into Gaza, as part of efforts to address humanitarian needs.
Additionally, Blinken met with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss the pressing need for a cessation of hostilities in Gaza. Their discussions also covered efforts to halt military operations and address the security and humanitarian situation in the region.
Looking ahead, Blinken emphasized the importance of preparing for the governance of Gaza post-conflict. He stressed the need for a new government cabinet comprising younger representatives committed to revitalizing the Palestinian Authority through transparency, anti-corruption measures, and building public confidence. Blinken also emphasized the imperative for Israel to cooperate with a new Palestinian Authority to achieve enduring security and peace in the region.
Regarding potential alternatives to an Israeli incursion in Rafah, Blinken refrained from providing specifics, noting the need for further discussions with Israeli officials. While emphasizing the necessity of addressing Hamas’s actions, he cautioned against measures that could result in harm to civilians. Blinken highlighted Hamas’s history of attacks and reiterated the importance of finding a lasting solution for enduring security and peace in the region.
As negotiations continue and diplomatic efforts intensify, Blinken’s optimism offers a glimmer of hope for progress towards a ceasefire and the release of hostages, underscoring the importance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
