‘Barbie’ Takes Center Stage with Nine Golden Globe Nominations, Followed by ‘Oppenheimer’

Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated film “Barbie” has dominated the nominations for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, securing an impressive nine nods. The nominations include recognition for the best picture in the musical or comedy category, along with individual acting accolades for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Additionally, three original songs from the blockbuster have earned nominations.

Following closely behind is Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” which garnered eight nominations, including one for best picture in the drama category. Notable actors Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt from the film also received individual nods.

Expressing her excitement, Gerwig stated, “I can’t wait to bring the Barbie party to the Globes.”

The Golden Globe Awards, now operating as a for-profit entity with a more extensive and diverse voting body, revealed its nominations for the upcoming awards show, marking a significant moment for the revamped organization. The awards ceremony is scheduled for January 7 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

In the best motion picture drama category, “Oppenheimer” faces competition from other notable films such as Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” Celine Song’s “Past Lives,” Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.”

For the best motion picture musical or comedy, “Barbie” is joined by contenders like “Air,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” “May December,” and “Poor Things.”

Other films with significant nominations include Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” both receiving seven nominations each. “Poor Things” received recognition for Lanthimos, actors Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Tony McNamara for the screenplay. Meanwhile, “Killers of the Flower Moon” earned nods for Scorsese, direction, co-writing the screenplay with Eric Roth, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro.

With Stone receiving nominations for both “Poor Things” and the Showtime series “The Curse,” the actor expressed her gratitude, saying, “Feeling extremely bewildered and thankful for it all.” Notably, Jennifer Lawrence secured a nomination for her R-rated comedy “No Hard Feelings” in the best performance by a female actor in a musical or comedy category.

As the Golden Globe Awards embrace a more diverse and expanded voting body, international films and actors found prominence in this year’s nominations. Standouts include the Finnish comedy “Fallen Leaves,” the courtroom thriller “Anatomy of a Fall,” and the Auschwitz drama “The Zone of Interest.”

Netflix emerged as the leader in nominations with 13, thanks to films such as “Maestro,” “May December,” and “Rustin,” while Warner Bros., responsible for “Barbie” and “The Color Purple,” followed closely with 12 nominations.

As the 81st Golden Globes approach, the ceremony is set to make history as the first major awards show broadcast on CBS. Amidst a tumultuous few years for the Golden Globes, marked by scandals and controversies, the revamped awards show is anticipated with a mix of excitement and curiosity.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards, scheduled for January 7, 2023, will set the tone for this year’s awards season, promising a night of celebration and recognition for outstanding achievements in the world of film and television.
