Perry High School Shooting Leaves One Dead, Several Injured – Community in Shock

Perry High School in Iowa witnessed a tragic school shooting on Thursday morning, resulting in one student killed, five injured, and the suspected shooter, identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting unfolded before the school day commenced, and the suspects’ actions left a sixth-grade student dead, along with several others injured, including Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger. Reports indicate that one victim is in critical condition, while the remaining four are stable.

Authorities responded swiftly to the active shooting incident reported around 7:37 a.m. local time, ensuring that students and faculty were either sheltering in place or evacuating the premises. Despite the horrific event, Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante assured the public, stating, “There is no further danger to the public. The community is safe.”

The suspected shooter, Dylan Butler, was found dead with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun, alongside the discovery of a “rudimentary” explosive device within the school premises, later rendered safe by authorities.

Notably, the tragic incident occurred on the first day back to school after the winter break, creating a somber atmosphere within the community. As a response, the school district has decided to close on Friday, allowing time for reflection and support.

Family members of the victims expressed a mix of shock and relief. Jody Kurth shared that her stepson sustained injuries but is recovering well, while her daughter conveyed the harrowing experience via text. “It was absolutely horrifying, that’s one of the worst moments of my entire life,” she said.

Senior Rachel Kares, who was present at the school during the incident, recounted hearing gunshots during jazz band rehearsal and described the chaotic scene that followed. “I just ran,” she said, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Authorities revealed that the suspect, Dylan Butler, may have acted alone, and an investigation into his background and motive is underway. Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation, shared that the suspect had made social media posts around the time of the shooting, and law enforcement is actively securing this evidence.

An image believed to be of Butler posted on TikTok from inside a Perry High School bathroom on the morning of the shooting is under investigation. The post, captioned “now we wait,” accompanied by the song “Stray Bullet,” raises questions about the possible mindset of the suspect at the time.

Approximately 150 officers from local, state, and federal agencies promptly responded to the incident, showcasing the coordinated effort to address the aftermath of the tragedy. The U.S. attorney general has been briefed on the incident, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

As the Perry community grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds expressed her condolences, stating, “Our hearts are heavy today, and our prayers are with the Perry community.” President Joe Biden, monitoring the situation, conveyed his sympathies, calling for reflection on yet another tragic school shooting and questioning, “When will enough be enough?”

This heartbreaking event adds to the ongoing national conversation about gun violence and school safety, renewing calls for comprehensive measures to address these recurring tragedies.
